Wellness culture often talks about self-regulation.
Breathe deeply.
Journal more.
Meditate daily.
Fix your sleep.
Calm your nervous system.
Build better habits.
These tools can be helpful. But Social Baseline Theory asks an important question: what if the nervous system never evolved to regulate completely alone?
Social Baseline Theory, developed by psychologist James Coan and colleagues, suggests that the human brain expects access to safe, supportive relationships. In this view, connection is not just emotionally comforting. It may be part of the body’s basic strategy for conserving energy, reducing threat, and managing life’s demands.
In simple terms: safe people can make the world feel less heavy.
The Brain Expects Connection
Social Baseline Theory proposes that humans evolved in social groups, not as isolated individuals. For most of human history, survival depended on cooperation: sharing resources, raising children, detecting danger, recovering from illness, and managing uncertainty together.
Because of this, the brain may treat trusted relationships as resources. Coan and Sbarra describe social connection as a way the brain can reduce both “risk and effort,” meaning supportive relationships may lower the perceived danger of a situation and reduce how much biological effort is needed to cope with it.
This helps explain why the same problem can feel completely different depending on whether we are facing it alone or with someone steady beside us.
A difficult appointment.
A painful flare-up.
A stressful decision.
A hard conversation.
A season of uncertainty.
When we feel supported, the body may not need to brace as intensely.
The Hand-Holding Study
One of the most famous studies related to Social Baseline Theory looked at what happened in the brain when people anticipated a mild electric shock.
In the study, married women were placed in an fMRI scanner under three conditions: holding their husband’s hand, holding a stranger’s hand, or holding no hand at all. The researchers found that hand-holding reduced neural responses to threat, especially when participants held their husband’s hand. The effect was strongest in women who reported higher relationship quality.
This finding suggests that support not only changes how people think about threat; it changes how the brain processes threat.
The body was still in the same scanner.
The possible shock was still there.
But the nervous system responded differently when a safe connection was present.
Loneliness Is Not Just Emotional

Social Baseline Theory also helps explain why loneliness can feel so physically exhausting.
If the brain expects social support as part of its baseline operating system, then chronic disconnection may require the body to work harder. More vigilance. More self-protection. More effort spent scanning, coping, and carrying life alone.
Research on social isolation and loneliness supports the idea that disconnection is linked with physical health pathways, including inflammation. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that social isolation and loneliness were associated with some inflammatory markers, though the authors noted that more rigorous research is needed to clarify mechanisms. More recent multi-cohort work also found associations between social isolation, loneliness, and inflammatory markers, suggesting that inflammation may be one pathway linking disconnection with poorer health outcomes.
This evidence does not suggest loneliness directly causes illness. But it does suggest that social connection belongs in conversations about health, stress, and recovery.
Loneliness is not just sadness. It can become a body burden.
Support Can Buffer Stress
Social support may also help reduce the physiological wear and tear of stress.
Allostatic load refers to the cumulative burden placed on the body when stress systems are repeatedly or chronically activated. A review on psychosocial resources and allostatic load suggests that resources such as social support and a sense of mastery may influence health, partly through their relationship with allostatic load.
Another review on social support and stress biology describes evidence that supportive relationships can buffer stress and shape brain and body responses, including stress physiology, emotion regulation, and neural threat processing.
In everyday language, supportive connection may help the body spend less time in full defense mode.
That is why certain people feel regulating to be around. Their tone, presence, steadiness, facial expression, and responsiveness can send the body a quiet signal: you are safe enough right now.
Co-Regulation: The Body-to-Body Side of Support

Before we learn self-regulation, we learn co-regulation.
Infants rely on caregivers to help regulate stress through touch, voice, rhythm, eye contact, warmth, and responsiveness. But this does not disappear in adulthood. Adults also influence each other’s nervous systems.
A calm practitioner can make a client feel safer.
A supportive friend can make a hard day feel manageable.
A steady partner can help the body soften.
A peaceful group environment can make regulation easier.
Co-regulation does not mean another person “fixes” us. It means humans are biologically responsive to one another.
From a Thera Wellness perspective, this connects beautifully with biosignals. The body constantly reads signals from both the internal and external environment: heart rhythm, breath, muscle tension, pain, tone of voice, facial expression, proximity, and emotional safety.
Some signals tell the body to brace.
Others tell the body it can begin to soften.
Why This Matters for Healing
Many people blame themselves for struggling to regulate.
They think they should be calmer.
They should be more disciplined.
They should meditate better.
They should be able to handle everything alone.
But Social Baseline Theory offers a gentler interpretation. Maybe the issue is not weakness. Maybe the body is doing exactly what it was designed to do when it feels under-supported.
Healing is not only an individual process. It is also shaped by relationships, environments, and signals of safety.
For holistic practitioners, this matters deeply. A therapy, device, protocol, supplement, or wellness plan does not exist in isolation. It is delivered within a relationship. The practitioner’s steadiness, clarity, warmth, and listening ability may become part of the client’s regulatory environment.
The body is always asking:
Am I safe here?
Am I supported here?
Do I have to carry this alone?
Everyday Ways to Apply Social Baseline Theory
Social Baseline Theory does not mean we should become dependent on others or avoid solitude. Solitude can be restorative when it is chosen and safe.
The key difference is whether the body feels alone or supported.
Everyday support can be simple:
- Calling someone who helps you feel grounded.
- Going to appointments with a trusted person.
- Joining a wellness, movement, or support community.
- Working with a practitioner who listens carefully.
- Spending time with people who do not require you to perform.
- Noticing which relationships leave your body tense, guarded, or depleted.
- Letting yourself receive help before you reach burnout.
The goal is not constant togetherness. The goal is safe connection.

Social Baseline Theory reminds us that the nervous system is social.
The body does not only respond to sleep, food, movement, pain, inflammation, and stress hormones. It also responds to the people around us. A steady voice, a safe relationship, a supportive community, or a calm practitioner can change how life feels in the body.
In a culture that often turns healing into a solo project, this theory offers a softer truth:
You were never meant to carry everything alone.
Sometimes regulation begins not with trying harder, but with feeling supported enough to stop bracing.
